International Day of Yoga

In December 2014, 21 June was declared International Day of Yoga by the UN General Assembly.

BKS Iyengar had alluded to the concept and in September 2014, a month after his death, it was formally requested by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi:

"Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."  A total of 175 nations co-sponsored the resolution,

Since 2015 International Day of Yoga has been observed by millions worldwide. In the UK IY UK member groups, centres and individual teachers have marked the day hosting free events and taster classes.
